We're the Essary family and we're exploring America one destination at a time. Join us on this episode of TravelEssary. As we talk about some of the unique experiences. You can only have in the United States of America. Let's chat.
Welcome and thank you for joining us on this episode. As we talk about. Unique experiences in the United States. Now I know that every country has its own unique experiences, that if you really want to be a part of that culture and you. You know, you're looking for specific things, then you need to go to certain regions to really have that authentic. Experience and the United States has quite a few experience that you can come over and some have very region specific.
And then some are just kind of a general thing. If you go to any state, you can still enjoy this unique American experience. And the reason I wanted to do this episode is because recently, we have had a lot of listeners from other countries quite a bit, actually. We have a huge following from Australian listeners. But in the last several weeks we have picked up a following in Japan, from France, from India.
So I wanted to talk about, um, things that you can only get or only. Experience in America. It's very unique to this country. And even if you are listening in the United States, there are unique experiences in different regions where you've might have. Experienced something like this where you're at right now, but if you're looking for the authentic, like true. Taste of the experience. Then you might have to travel a little bit. Yeah, I see a lot of people asking, like we're coming to America for the first time and what can we do to get the real American experience?
And we kind of talked about this in our Texas podcasts. Like when people say, how can I see the true Texas? Well, all of Texas is the true Texas and it's kind of like that with America, but there are some things that. You really can't do anywhere else. So I guess that would be a way of experiencing. America as only. Americans can experience it right in. Or people who come to America, but also even in Texas, like there are certain regions, insects that are way better at certain things. Although you can experience it anywhere in sexist.
Certain areas are definitely way better. You know, even whenever you think about food, I mean, food is very region specific in my opinion about where the best is. And so we're going to talk about breaking down some of these regions and really talking about where to get the best experience.
I love watching YouTube videos of people who are coming to America for the first time. And I'm always amazed at the things that they are most excited about, which are so very mundane to me. And. One of the number one things that they want to come see and experience is like our grocery stores.
Yes. I've seen so many reactions of people coming to visit that go to our grocery stores. And at first I was like, that doesn't make any sense. And then I started watching videos. Of other regions and other countries and what they consider grocery stores or places that they can purchase food from. Um, the vast difference between the two. Yeah so much.
And you don't realize that unless you're again experiencing it, but I guess the. The size and the variety that we have in our grocery stores is far different than it is anywhere else in the world. Yes. Apparently we have the most variety whenever it comes to pretty much anything. Whether it's even from a convenience store all the way up to the big box.
And if you want an authentic. The United States grocery store. Experience. Then that actually only comes down to like three places that you really need to go to. Number one is Walmart. I mean, it's one of the biggest. Walmart box stores. Um, Going to Walmart, but yes, I guess Walmart is an experience, I guess if it's not something you grew up with every day. Then it would be something you would want to come and experience it. It's unique, I guess. It's unique.
It has so many different varieties in it. Or you can go to Costco and look at all the bulk items that are out there. Or, you know, especially if you come down to the south where HEB is and you get to look at the bakery and everything that is inside the grocery store or even to a Sam's club, which is pretty much like a Costco and just look at the best quantity.
I mean, The selections that we have at our grocery stores that because we live here and we go there. Every week is not that unique to us, but if you're traveling from outside the states,
It'll blow your mind with what our grocery stores do. And not just grocery stores, we have the world's largest gas station and as well. And actually when you go inside of it, it's almost like a grocery store. It's like a. It's Bucky's I think, I think most people have heard of Buc-ee's at this point.
I don't know. At least most Americans have definitely heard of. They've definitely heard. I don't know if they've experienced it because it's not everywhere. It originated in Texas and it has scattered throughout many of the Southern states. But it is, it is an experience. So if you're in the American south, And you're anywhere within driving distance near a Bucky's, you have to go.
It's an experience that even as Americans and even us as native Texans, that we still love our Buc-ee's. We still love to go to them. Just being able to get pretty much whatever you want to get from. Convenience store. Uh, Bucky's themed Walmart. Like it's like if someone put a gas station brand and Walmart together, I don't know how to explain it, but it's. Cleaner. Oh, yeah, so much cleaner, so much nicer. So much better product. Yes, but even, even sticking with the theme of, uh, Gas stations. Like a loves or a flight JS or a big trucks shocks. Yes.
Yes. That is a unique experience. Within itself, if you're not from America, um, many of our truck stops also have like restaurants inside of them. And they have places that people can pay to take a shower and things like that because they're made for our truck drivers, but it's not, it's not specifically just for truck drivers.
It's for anybody who wants to use those facilities. So our, our large gas stations and large grocery stores. Often have restaurants in them. That's a very common thing, actually.
So the. American grocery store, large guests stations are just. They're unique and it's something that we've grown really complacent with or comfortable with. Accustomed to it. So it doesn't really seem that unique to us. But whenever you really think about it going okay. Yeah, I can go get my milk, bread and eggs.
I can go get my dog food. I can go get a laptop. I can go get camping equipment. I can go get. Uh, Valentine's gift. I can go pick up pots and pans, your medicine, pharmacy medicine. Yeah. Everything you want to, you want to go plant corn or something. They have the seeds in the lawn and garden service. And so I'm like, it's a one stop shop.
And that's just, you know, now that you think about it, it's. That's kind of a mind blowing that everything that you need is in one store. Yeah. And I think the reason, places like Walmart exists is because America is, is best. It's a very large country and especially in the rural areas where we live, um, and throughout. You know, most of America. You can go. Large distances without having anything. And so if you're going from small town to small town, to small town, where there. They, if they didn't offer things like a Walmart, you would have to travel. Ours.
I mean, like four or five, six hours to go to a larger city where they had, you know, a, a nursery. Or a, an electronic store or just the different, a clothing store. We have many small towns around here that don't even have clothing stores. They're like, Walmart's the only place or a dollar store that sells clothing.
So a place like Walmart or target, they put. All of those things together, it makes it super convenient for those of us who live. The hours and hours away from a large city. It's just, it's really all about convenience. It's a one-stop shop type place. And that's everything from Walmart. Sam's. I mean, the HEBs Costco even Buc-ee's that we've kind of talked about.
I mean, it's almost all just a one-stop place. Another thing that is very specific to the south, other than Bucky's that we were talking about. Is American Southern comfort food.
Now, this is just making my mouth drool. Just thinking about the different comfort foods that we have. We live in the American south. You get it all the time you get. All the time, but it still makes me like, oh my goodness, I want some of this. And I want some of that. And, you know, we've gone to other places and we've eaten the same type of food. In those places. But it didn't taste like the Southern soul food. Yeah.
I feel like. I give you an Italy. You have to have authentic Italian pasta. If you're in Japan, you need sushi or a good bowl of ramen. Like if you're in France, you, you need some pastries. Like. There are specific places in the world that just do certain things, right. Because that's where they originated.
And that's like, that's where they were born. Yeah. That's where they've perfected it. Yes. And in the American south it's things like. Biscuits with sausage gravy.
Like that's, that's an American , Southern staple or things like chicken fried steak. Or really good barbecue. Now that's just a Texas thing. It's a Texas thing. Like there are Freido ground. There are things like I can, I could go on and on and on. Of what you can find in the south that either you're either not going to find it anywhere else. Even in America or it's not going to be as good. I mean, absolutely.
. And it surely bags a lot of stuff that, that has like Southern soul food is like fraud. But it's just comfort.
So like even fried chicken, like you can go get fried chicken almost anywhere, but like Southern backyard. You know, picnic type stuff. Fried chicken. With her buttermilk recipe. Yes. It's if you're looking for. So some good food that just , touches your soul and just makes you all warm inside.
I mean, the Southern find somewhere with soul food or somewhere with like a Southern diner in the American south somewhere. It's just, . It makes you feel so warm inside. You can't go wrong with it. And I'm not saying he, a lot of it excessively because you will gain weight. Yes, definitely don't do that.
But even those of us that live here, it's not something, not things we eat every day. We don't eat chicken fried steak every day or biscuits and gravy every day. Um, maybe the heavy items like that once or twice a week. But when we do it just warms our souls. Oh, yeah. Whenever, you know, we have a code for it or something that comes through, then it's like, oh, we want this.
And I was like, oh, we want the chili. And we want some other things. Kelly Frito pie. Everything hits you. Depending on what season it is, but man, it's. And we're not specifically talking about Texas now. Texas does have a lot of those things, but Louisiana. Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama. I mean, my goodness with Louisiana, you'll find more of like the Cajun food experience that you're not going to get anywhere else. Like the crawfish boil and stuff.
Oh my goodness. That's the place. All the yummy, delicious, Cajun food that you're not going to find anywhere else, as far as like it being authentic and delicious and perfect. Yes. So if you get a chance and , you're coming down south. Talk to a local. They will tell you where to find. There are two. To must tries, um, Not, not including any kind of barbecue things.
Cause I, I, again, I think that's very Texas specific that you have to try, but if you're in the south, there are two things you must try. And that is chicken fried steak. Okay. And biscuits and gravy. I agree with that. Because they're both Southern staples. No. Whenever she says biscuit and gravy. That's biscuit and sausage gravy.
Right. It's actually.
Not cookies. It's American biscuits, soft, warm, flaky biscuits, and then a , uh, breakfast, sausage gravy. It's uh, stop. Stop it. You're making me hungry. Actually, whenever we went to the store today, I actually bought stuff. I saw it whenever you brought it. Yeah.
And so if it's, because I was planning this episode, Yeah. It's a special blend of like biscuits and then a specific gravy. Now, if you're just looking for. You know, biscuit and gravy, you can go get that anywhere, but like Southern comfort, food biscuit, and sausage gravy. I said that's a totally different level all on its own.
Yeah. Or if you can even get someone to invite you to their house and then cook it for you, it's going to be even better than a restaurant. That is so true. So true. Yeah. So those are very specific things that are like Southern related. Now this one's not really Southern related, this one's more of eight. I Western in that is rodeos. If you want the American cowboy experience. You're talking places like Texas, obviously, but then Wyoming, Montana. Those are all places that you can have, like a really authentic, well, not even like Merrick and cowboy. I mean, because even in like to the, see. At Kentucky.
I mean, those places are steel. You know, cowboy S just like Texas and Wyoming and. Just an authentic. Rodeo, I'm talking like from the very beginning, whenever they're first introducing to the national Anthem to. You know, they're doing the flag parade and they're, they're talking about all their sponsors and, and just everything that goes along with it.
It's just, it's, it's unique and it's just different. And there's. I do think there are some places that do it better than others. Um, you have Casper, Wyoming, it's known for its huge rodeos. And then, you know, in Texas they're everywhere, but then there are places like Bendera, which is supposed to be like the home of the rodeo. And then also, um, the state fair, if you go to the state fair, which is, , September, October of the year, it's only one month out of the year, but, um, some amazing rodeos at the state fair.
And then of course the Fort worth stockyards in Texas have. Rodeos all the time and a very authentic like American cowboy experience.
And in a rodeo, uh, an American rodeo. Is an experience that I feel like you have to have, if you come to America. It's so American, you know, American yeah. But, I mean, especially whenever you're talking about. Rodeos, whether it's the PBR. Which is the professional bull riding association. Uh, or some of the other associations that go around. Getting one of those, or just going to. A county fair.
I mean, it's just. At certain times of the year, especially in Texas. Any small to large town that you're going to, any of them, they're going to have rodeos. You're going. I have rodeos. And so, I mean, you can. There's even people that follow the rodeos, like just jump from one rodeo to another during the summertime. But, uh, It's there.
There. It's really unique on how we do rodeos and the bull riding in this. And what you're going to see. Like you're going to see little kids on the backs of. Little baby, cows and sheep.
The kids are gonna go out there and trying to wrangle them to house. And herd sheep and run around. And I'm talking like three-year-olds. Chasing down sheep. It's fully immersive in like entertaining from the very youngest. No. If it's, but like the very youngest I can run and walk. All the way up to. We took our one-year-old.
Now the first time he went to a rodeo, he was nine months old and he loved it. I have videos of him clapping and hollering and.
And you can watch the professionals. You can watch the amateurs, you can watch those that do it for fun. And then you can watch those that are just being adventurous. And they're very interactive, the rodeo clowns and stuff interact with the crowds.
It's, it's very interactive. It's very fun. It's very exciting. And it's very American and you're going to get those times where they're going to be playing American songs, and then they're going to cut it off and you have to finish the. The phrase, or you have to do a certain action or something because it's just that genuine American spirit. , and it's, it's really fun. And it's really enjoyable. If you get an opportunity to go to an authentic rodeo.
And one of those Western states. You won't be disappointed. Which kind of makes me think of the next thing we're going to talk about. As far as the atmosphere is concerned in that is. American sporting events. Like . Specifically, I guess, American football or even an American baseball game there. An experience.
I think everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Um, as Americans, I still greatly enjoy going to like our local high school games and things like that. But if you want to see it on a large scale, then. I think like a professional American football sporting event. It is a must try. Now, if you don't want to pay that money or you're not going to be somewhere, um, that has a professional American sporting event go find a high school football if you're there during high school season, because you're still going to get a pretty unique experience.
That's what I was going to say is. It doesn't matter what level it is from the high school level to the college amateur pro. We love our sports and it really doesn't matter what sport it is. You're going to get fans that are crazy. You're going to get, you're going to, they're just going to be a mascot.
There's going to be announcers. You know, it's going to go above and beyond, so anywhere you go, there's going to be fans that are cheering. Um, . People love their sports in America. Even the amateurs or high schools. There are towns still today. Like. Right now, whenever I'm speaking, that will close the entire town. They will shut down all the shops, all the eating places, everything closes. Because everyone's going to a football game. Uh, high school football, high school football game. Yeah.
And there's some places that are even local high school football that they will pack out arenas to watch high school basketball because it's, it's just that entertaining. And they, they just. They just get into it. I think that even the high school part is a very unique experience because, um, for people who don't live in America, you grow up seeing these TV shows of. Um, you know, high school football and cheerleaders and the whole thing and bonfires and all of that is very, very, very real. Um, we do take it to an extreme scale, no matter how big or small that town is.
So , if you can come and experience that from the very beginning for the national Anthem, to the very end, when the winning team , is cheering and excited and celebrating , it's definitely a great experience.
I think one more, um, experience type thing. Would be visiting the home of jazz, the birth of jazz. American jazz is so beautiful. It's like comfort food. It warms your soul. You know, like the Southern comfort food and the home of jazz is a new Orleans and Louisiana. And, um, If you want to experience. That culture a good time to come is Darren Marty girl. Yes. Well, I say good. Well, it's an, it's an interesting time. Yeah, it is an experience.
It's kind of like, I mean, I guess it's like, You're taking the same risks that you would walking down Vegas strip or something like that. It can be a really fun and exciting experience. And then sometimes there are safety concerns when it comes to Mardi Gras. So, you know, Does it look into that, but it, um, if you want that the home of jazz and just that entire culture and experience, which you can't get anywhere else in the world, it's right there in new Orleans. And it's the experience that we're talking about going into the atmosphere and just hearing that. That soulful music being played, which is what jazz is all about. My dad plays saxophone. So I grew up with a lot of jazz. My dad's a big jazz fan. A lot of times our radio station was on smooth jazz. So jazz has a special place in my heart. And. I think I would love. I've never experienced the jazz culture in new Orleans but, um, I definitely want to, I'm not a big fan of new Orleans. I'm not a big fan of the city. Itself.
Because usually when we go through there, we're traveling from one place to the other and we don't just stop. And it's not a fun place to travel through. But as far as having that, that jazz experience along with all of the amazing soul food and Cajun food that you can have while you're there, it's definitely. It's definitely a unique American experience.
And so, I mean, it doesn't matter what type of music that you like, just whenever you hear jazz, it's just. There's something about it just kind of catches you. And you just find yourself, like bobbing your head to it, or you just like. Especially me. You know, I closed my eyes and I'm like, Hmm. Oh yeah. I feel you. It's like just really good and like entertaining. And so if you can't make it all the way to Louisiana, Them. Depending on where you are.
There are a lot of great places to experience, stuff like that. In New York, Chicago, lots of places. Yes. Yes. A lot of great places that you can go and go to a jazz lounge or something like that and, and be able to just it's, it's definitely a vibe. And I think it's all rhythm and flow. I mean, we can get it to all the technicalities of this. But just the way that it makes you feel inside that atmosphere is just so while you're in America, experience some jazz.
Another thing that I think is unique to America is that alien.
And I'm doing air quotes experience that you can have while you're here. And this is definitely. Specific to like New Mexico Roswell, um, area 51, things like that. But. Um, even when we went to Carlsbad. There was like alien stuff everywhere. Yeah. So New Mexico in general is a very, very good place. If you want the alien experience. They've totally. Dived into it, . New Mexico has just owned. The alien experience. Um, Roswell has like a UFO museum and there's like alien themed hotels and alien themed restaurants and alien themed. Any like anything you want. It's there. Oh, yeah. Like sleeping in a UFO type stuff. Yeah. And , , throughout the year in different places, they do lectures about, , the newest theories or people who have been, um,
Abducted.
I'm doing air quotes again. , but if it's, if it's something that you truly believe in, then it's an experience you want to go have. If it's, if you just enjoy the quirkiness of it, like we do, like, we enjoy the kitschy. Niche of it, you know? Um, then again, that's a very, a very fun experience. And it's kind of region specific, especially whenever you're talking about New Mexico. Um, that. You know, it was just one of those things that it's just.
It's kind of hard to explain. Yeah. But it's one of those things that no matter what America that you talked to, they're like, you know, if you asked it was like, ah, so what about UFO's? I mean, they're going to bring up New Mexico and area 51. They're going to be. Putting you down in that area to go. If you want some more information or some more things, you want to go see some things, and then that's where you need to go.
And actually, um, the next thing we're going to talk about is an American road trip.
And I think the American road trip is route 66. Oh yeah. I mean, it is the most iconic. Put that way. The most iconic road trip. That you could possibly take. And a lot of the stops along route 66 also have like that kitschy alienness to them as well. So if you're taking that road trip, that'll be a fun, little stop as well.
Those would be fun, little stops, but route 66, it's the vintage American road trip. It's the. Original American road trip. No, do not get on the interstate. That's going to bypass route 66. Yeah. We're specifically talking about. There's the old school rules. 66. I have to do some research, so you don't get on the wrong route, but, um, if you have a couple of days to do that,
you're going to see beautiful sites along that way. You're going to have the most unique stops and , it's a good way to see. Um, a lot of the stops hotels, motels, restaurants are still themed along that 50 ish time period. Yeah. Neon lights. Yeah, they have like that , 1950s aesthetic to them.
If anyone has ever seen cars, Then Disney movie.
I mean that's, it's the car version of route 66. Yeah. That's kind of what it is. And, you know, it was so true that whenever they built the interstate, that kind of bypass the route 66 of those smaller towns that kind of were, were hurt from it. They get. Yeah. A lot of people are starting to go back to wanting to travel that natural route 66.
And I think it's just one of those unique. Places. That. , you're traveling on a iconic road. In beautiful scenery. I mean, it's the. The greatest. You know that in our opinion, anyways, the greatest road trip that you could possibly take down any one specific road is route 66. I actually planned a route 66, um, road trip. Uh, like about two years ago, we were unable to do it. We've talked about this before.
Cause I got put on bed rest and I was pregnant. It was a whole thing, but , A lot of the stops was about like the history. Of route 66, like a lot of the stops that you can stop at was about the history of it. I think it has gained a lot of popularity, especially since 2020 road trips have got more popular again, when everyone's traveling like was restricted overseas and flights were all weird.
And, um, a lot of people started road tripping again. And I think route 66 has. Again, picked up that. The popularity of what it used to have, or it's gaining more traction.
And talking about American scenery. There are some things that you can see in America, such as our national parks. That.
Are absolutely beautiful. I think if you're coming to America for the first time. You should visit at least one of the national parks, at least one, we have such beautiful and unique places such as. Um, the grand canyon.
The red wood forest. You can see old faithful, you know, we've got Yellowstone. We have things like Nagra falls. We have, um, Carlsbad caverns, a huge giant Cape systems
so lots of beautiful. Beautiful places to explore. Like she already said the national parks are amazing. , the grand canyon besides, I mean, it's just a sight to behold. All on itself. I mean the Redwood forest. Of how old and massive those trees are. Some of the oldest trees in the world, old faithful, you know, the thing that keeps on going off. You know, ever so often, I mean, just. And in case you don't know what old faithful is, it's a Geyser. I didn't think about.
We all know. Faithless. I have no idea of everyone else in the rest of the world knows what old faithful is, but it's a Geyser. In Yellowstone national park. And then, uh, a unique experience like to the grand canyon is the skywalk. Do you know what the skywalk is? So it was actually on our, our planned road trip that we were supposed to have.
So the skywalk is a glass bridge, essentially that you can walk over the grand canyon, like over a part of it into this section. And you can see beneath you. I know China has a lot of similar places up in their mountains where you can go across like glass bridges and stuff. Yeah. So if that's an experience you want to have while you're in America, then. Um, head on to the grand canyon and do that.
Another site to behold is the space center in Houston.
It's actually a lot of places in Texas that you can go , to have that space themed experience, but NASA would definitely be the. The front runner and the largest place, right. NASA in Houston. Whenever, you know, they have all the different museums and everything that you can go there. They have the rocket pad, all that. You know, big science-y stuff, that's going on. Um, It's just really cool
and you get to see where , the phrase Houston, we have a problem. It was born. And so it's just so many American movies and it's just, it's a uniqueness in
and it's a sight to behold, just the vastness of how big that that place is that they have to cordon off and they have to make safe.
So many, um, like picturesque opportunities, things like that. And if you want to travel six or seven hours down the coast, you can go to Boca Chica in Texas, and you can go watch some space X launches. Yeah. I mean, so our take place a couple of times a month. A couple times and they do some, some crazy stuff down there as well.
The more site seen more picture taking. So down there in Houston, in the Boca Chica area, I mean, there's a lot of great places that is unique specifically.
There's a place in Florida that does launches. What's the place in Florida. Cape Canaveral in Florida. And so. You don't have to come to Texas to get a little bit of it.
You can go to you. We'll be in Orlando, Florida, and travel up to, cape Canaveral. Or the Kennedy space center. Can you space, internet and check it out there. So, uh, but it is a uniqueness because not every place , in the world has something like this. Now, if you want to visit the world largest museum complex. The Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC is the largest museum complex.
So it has. Art history science, like all of the above.
If you like. To experience human culture in general, just human. Culture. Of all cultures then I think the Smithsonian in DC is like the perfect place to go. It definitely has. On a grand scale, like brought everything in together. In one location. I mean, they have so much history of other. Countries and nations and everything else that have all been brought into this one place.
And then all the American history. And that even beyond history, when you start talking about science, you know, art and I mean, The list goes on and on because it's all been brought into one central location.
And as far as a singular complex, that has. You know, that that is classified as a museum. In my opinion, this is the greatest of them all. And I think we might be a little bit biased because of course, if you're in that area, you have. So many historical monuments, American historical monuments. That are, um, you know, paramount to the birth of America. I mean, yeah. I mean that itself has so many different other unique monuments that, you know, are, are very specific to our history. And how we came about. You know what we're doing here and what our forefathers have set up for us. And, I could get central mental about a lot of them just talking about them and just thinking about what they specifically mean to me. Within itself, but even as someone that is visiting America for the very first time that. Just curious , Washington DC within itself is an amazing place to go, but that does bring us to the last thing I want to talk about, which is historical monuments or Memorial monuments.
And whenever you talk about that, Washington DC is probably the greatest location of those. But there's so many more. I mean like New York has so many different monuments that are set up. Philadelphia has stuff that's set up. Um, you know, even if you want to get away from the east coast and travel the rest of the United States, Mount Rushmore. Is a fantastic place to go.
It's really just unique within itself.
